New Licensees
Beginning January 1, 2007 all licenses issued with an effective date on or after 01/01/2007 will have an expiration date that falls on the licensee’s birthday. The year of renewal depends on the year of the licensee’s birth (if the licensee was born in an even year, renewal is in an even year; if the licensee was born in an odd year, renewal is in an odd year). The original licensing period is not required to be a full two years. Any original license issued after January 1, 2007 will expire on the next birthday.
Current Licensees
If a licensee cannot renew his/her license by license renewal deadline then the license will expire. When ready to re-instate the license the individual must complete a relicensing application on the NY State Department of Insurance’s Website. If CE was required to renew the license, CE is required to relicense as well. During the period when the license is expired the licensee will have no authority and can not write any new business until the license is renewed.
Relicensing does not require a two year licensing period. For a LA licensee that expires 06/30 and intends to relicense, the next expiration date will be on his/her birthday in the next even or odd year (example licensee born 12/24/59 allows license to expire and relicenses 08/01/07. The license will now be effective until 12/24/07 - six months). If the licensee is born 5/21/60 then the license will expire on 5/21/08.
A licensee has 2 years from the date the license expired to relicense before having to take the licensing exam again.
Here are some examples of what will happen with birthday renewals:
Example: a licensee’s birthday is 01/24/58:
LA license expires 06/30/07, renews - effective 07/01/07 until 01/24/10 (if born in even year)
PC license expires 06/30/08, renews - effective 07/01/08 until 01/24/12 (if born in even year)
BR license expires 10/31/08, renews - effective 11/01/08 until 01/24/12 (if born in even year)
Example: a licensee’s birthday is 01/24/63
LA license expires 06/30/07, renews – effective 07/01/07 until 01/24/11 (if born in odd year)
PC license expires 06/30/08, renews - effective 07/01/08 until 01/24/11 (if born in odd year)
BR license expires 10/31/08, renews - effective 11/01/08 until 01/24/11 (if born in odd year)
